When Cali and Jackson told me what mattered most to them in a photographer, they kept it simple: they wanted someone who could capture their joy. That answer stayed with me through their entire wedding day. Because between the quiet moments in the getting-ready suite and the last song on the dance floor, there was no shortage of pure joy throughout.
Cali and Jackson’s fine art photography wedding in Portland, Oregon was the kind of day that reminds me why I do this work. Cali is a nurse who does florals on the side, and when she reached out she told me she wanted someone who could photograph florals and design well. I don’t take that lightly. Being chosen for that reason, by someone who understands flowers and composition herself, meant she was going to notice everything. And she did. She made sure their day was elegant without being stiff. Faith-filled without being formal. And full of the kind of laughter and genuine connection that makes a wedding feel like something beyond a production.
Getting ready
Cali got ready in one of the most beautiful hotel suites I’ve photographed. Deep teal walls, ornate crown molding, rich navy carpeting. It’s the kind of interior that does half the compositional work before you even pick up a camera. Her gown was a long-sleeve lace design with a cathedral train, refined and considered, and it suited both her and the space completely.
Cali’s mom was there throughout getting ready, and the two of them together were one of my favorite things to document all day. Quiet and close in the way that only a mother and daughter can be. Her bridesmaids wore black, which created a clean contrast in every frame. The bouquets, which were a soft blush, cream, and white, tied it together beautifully without competing with everything else. The details throughout getting ready felt chosen rather than assembled, which is the mark of a couple who knew exactly what they wanted the day to look and feel like.

The brothers
Cali’s older brothers were exactly what you’d hope older brothers at a wedding would be: proud, protective, and genuinely funny. The kind of family presence that fills a room without trying to. You felt them throughout the whole day.
The first look
Cali and Jackson did their first look outside the church, against the brick facade and iron gates. Jackson had his back to her. When he turned around, she was already crying. It was the sweetest, and I felt so lucky to get to capture this moment that will certainly be a life-long memory for them.
Those are the moments I stay present for. No posing, no direction. Just two people together, on the day that changes everything.

The ceremony
The ceremony was held at St. Mary Immaculate Church in Portland, with painted arch murals, stained glass windows, and the kind of light that comes through at mid-morning and fills a room in a way that’s intentional, and impossible to replicate. The florals were lush and garden-like, arranged in white urns at the end of each pew, white and blush with trailing greenery. The space was full of their people packed into the pews.
The recessional was one of my favorite moments. White ribbon wands waving, guests cheering on the steps, Cali laughing with her bouquet in the air, Jackson kissing her right there in front of everyone. Portland wedding photos don’t get much better than that. It was picture-perfect.

The reception
The reception was held at The Sentinel Hotel in Portland, and the design throughout was sharp and considered. A moody blue bar with rattan pendant lighting. A black and white checkered dance floor. Super cute custom matchbook favors printed with their names and the wedding location. A bar menu featuring signature cocktails named The Rosie and The Chief.
Every detail had personality and intention behind it. Cali worked closely with her planner on the design and it showed. There was nothing there just for the sake of being there. No fluff, nothing performed for social media. Just a celebration that felt like them, grounded and real in the best way. No generic luxury wedding templates here. It had the kind of details that separate a wedding that photographs just fine from one that photographs perfectly and beautifully, like theirs did.

On the dance floor
The reception was hopping the whole night. Jackson dipped Cali on the checkered floor. Guests danced in sequined gowns and cowboy hats. The energy in the room was the kind you can feel through a photograph, which is rare and special.
Photographing a wedding where people are fully present and fully celebrating is such a gift. Cali and Jackson’s guests were both.

A note on fine art photography for weddings
Cali and Jackson specifically sought out fine art photography for their wedding because they understood the difference it makes in how a day is documented. Fine art photography for weddings doesn’t do heavily edited, over-filtered images. It’s all about intentional composition, attention to light, and a documentary instinct that lets the important moments land on their own without forcing them. The way Cali’s veil caught the light in the getting-ready suite. The look on Jackson’s face at the first look. The joy pouring out of that church recessional.
That’s what fine art photography captures. And Cali and Jackson were made for it.
